As always, our courses are designed to be an open forum for discussion. You should leave with no suction denture question unanswered!
What are lower suction dentures (SEMCD)?
SEMCD is an acronym for Suction Effective Mandibular Complete Denture and is a revolutionary denture technique founded and developed by Dr. Jiro Abe in 1999.
SEMCD uses the soft tissues (i.e. the tongue, buccal mucosa, sublingual tissue) to seal the entire length of the mandibular denture providing more support for the denture. This creates a stronger seal and complete suction that keeps the denture firmly in place. It is ideal for patients with abnormal mandibular ridges or those who can’t afford full dental implant treatments.

MARGARET…
Margaret began her career in Dental Technology in 1996 at Glasgow Dental Hospital, where she worked in the prosthetics department. She earned her qualification as a dental technician in 1999 and her diploma in dental technology in 2005. During her 16 years at the hospital, she progressed to lead her own team in the lab and gained expertise in complex fixed and removable implant and obturator cases. Margaret always maintained contact with her patients, which she attributed to her success.
She left the Dental Hospital in 2011 to run an implant department within a commercial lab, where she discovered immediate loading. Margaret regularly attended clinics for immediate loading and chairside technical support. In 2013, Margaret opened her own lab, where she supported clinicians and patients throughout their implant journey, from planning to final restoration. Recently qualified as a CDT, Margaret is enthusiastic about her future, treating patients.
JOHN…
John was one of the first full time students who studied for a Certificate in Dental Technology. He qualified in 1978 from Manchester Polytechnic. He worked at Manchester Dental Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital before gaining his advanced City and Guilds Qualification in crown and bridgework. In 1980, he joined the RAF dental branch, gaining a lot of experience. This is where he specialised in implant supported restorations and removable prosthetics. He ran his lab successfully for sixteen years before selling it to Boots Dental Care in 2001.In June 2005, the British Institute of Dental and Surgical Technologists awarded John a Fellowship.
John has travelled extensively attending courses and presenting at various conferences around Europe. Europe. This includes the Association of Dental Implantology, the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry, Nobel BioCare World Conference, the Createch symposium, the international removable denture conference in Tokyo, and Neodent conference in Brazil. After qualifying as a Clinical Dental Technician in 2015, John received further training in Japan with Dr Jiro Abe.
